How Your Web Page Can Make Running Your Small Business Easier

July 16th, 2009 by Jennifer

Sure we live in the digital age, but some people and businesses have not yet jumped on the web page bandwagon. Are you avoiding making the digital leap?

If you are, you are not alone, and there are plenty of reasons why you may have put off building your company’s website or even foregone one all together. Perhaps you market your business through phone directories or you get your jobs through an agency or website, like SitterCity.com or eLance.com. Or perhaps the technology simply seems out of reach and you are not sure where to start.

Even if you are not quite sold on the need for a webpage for your business, you are probably still looking for ways to make your working life easier, right? The following list illustrates how a web page can not only help you market your business, but also give you more time to work at your business:

  1. Provide More Information about You and Your Services – If you do not market on the internet, chances are you market yourself with an ad elsewhere, or perhaps you network by passing around your business card or asking happy clients for referrals. While all those are tried and true ways to market your business, a website can help you expand on that contact. Add an “About Me” section, an explanation of your services, a testimonial page, or even a blog to hook potential clients. A directory listing or business card can only hold so much information, while a webpage can be virtually limitless. Plus, at today’s prices, websites are much cheaper than most print ads. In some cases, such as when you get started with Outright.com, before the end of August, websites are even free!
  2. Provide Built-In Customer Service – Do you spend a large chunk of your time explaining your consultancy fee or return policy to customers and potential customers? A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section on your website could do the talking for you. Many business owners find themselves answering the same questions over and over again. Why not collect all those questions in one easy to find place and save yourself the phone time?
  3. Provide an Easy, Low-Risk Way to Contact You – Some people would rather contact you through email than via phone. Perhaps they are afraid of the “hard sell” when they call, or perhaps they find email less time consuming. Or maybe they live internationally and want to avoid the charges. The important thing here is that providing an email, comment form, or even a comments section on your site allows your customers to contact you in a way that’s convenient to them.
  4. Engage with Clients and Potential Clients – Having a contact form, comments section, guest book, survey or any combination thereof on your site is a great way to obtain customer feedback. Introducing a blog on your site can also be a great way to catch new clients’ attention. With a blog you can give those potential clients industry news, tips about the service you provide, a taste of your unique personality and business style, or other relevant information that will make them choose you above your competitors.

Are you considering building a website for your business and have questions? Of have you recently introduced a website and noticed significant results? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
