This 4th of July Why Not Write Your Self-Employed Declaration of Independence?

July 2nd, 2009 by Jennifer

If you live in the United States you’ll probably be celebrating Independence Day this weekend by grilling out or watching a fireworks show. In all the fun, remember that the 4th of July represents the day that American colonists adopted the Declaration of Independence.

When is your personal, professional 4th of July?

The original Declaration of Independence listed wrongs that the American colonists were no longer willing to tolerate. If you are self-employed, chances are there are aspects of the old 9 to 5 that you were no longer willing to tolerate, too. This holiday weekend, why not make like the Founders and create your own Declaration of Independence?

Here are some suggestions to get you started. (Remember, the colonists declared their wishes boldly and so should you!)

  1. My time is my own and from now on I will value results achieved over hours logged
  2. I will no longer tolerate scoundrels who steal the snack from my homemade lunch
  3. Never again will I subject myself to the torture that is rush hour traffic
  4. I will not work all day in a confining business suit when comfy pajamas will do the trick
  5. I will not schedule meetings at 9am

It is worth your while to take all your grievances and jot them down into a document. If times ever get tough and you are tempted to give up your business venture, refer to your Self-Employed Declaration of Independence. It will remind you why you embarked on this great venture in the first place.

What bold statements would you include in your own Declaration of Independence? Let us know in the comments.
